Zico returned to Flamengo for the 1993/94 season — his final chapter at the club he had made famous — after years in Japan with Kashima Antlers, where he had helped establish Japanese football before the J.League's formation. By this stage of his career Zico was 40 years old, but his technical quality and vision remained extraordinary, and his return to the Maracanã was received with the reverence due to the greatest player in the club's history.

Zico scored 333 goals for Flamengo across his career and led them to the 1981 Copa Libertadores and the 1981 Intercontinental Cup. He is widely considered the greatest Brazilian footballer of the generation between Pelé and Ronaldo — the White Pelé — and Flamengo's most beloved player.
