Davor Šuker won the Golden Boot at the 1998 World Cup in France — scoring 6 goals as Croatia reached third place in only their second World Cup as an independent nation. His goals came against Jamaica, Japan, Romania, Germany and France, including a chip over Peter Schmeichel against Denmark. Wearing #9 throughout the tournament and into the 1998/99 international season, Šuker was the most clinical finisher in European football.
Croatia's third-place finish at France 1998 remains the best result by a debutant nation at a World Cup in the modern era. Šuker scored 45 international goals in 69 caps — Croatia's all-time top scorer until Mandzukić overtook him. He won La Liga with Real Madrid in 1997. This 1998/99 away shirt is from the season immediately after one of the great World Cup individual performances.
