Roberto Clemente played winter ball in Puerto Rico throughout his MLB career, and this 1964 San Juan vintage jersey represents his deep roots on the island. Clemente wore #21 throughout his career — a number now retired across all of MLB on the anniversary of his passing. By 1964 he was an established Pittsburgh Pirates star: a two-time Gold Glove winner with a .312 career batting average, universally regarded as the finest right fielder of his era.
Clemente died on December 31, 1972, in a plane crash while delivering earthquake relief supplies to Nicaragua — he was 38 years old with 3,000 career hits. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame immediately, the five-year waiting period waived in his honour. The Roberto Clemente Award is now given annually to the MLB player who best represents the sport through community service. This San Juan winter ball jersey is a tribute to one of baseball's most beloved and heroic figures.
