Roberto Clemente played winter ball in Puerto Rico throughout his MLB career, and this 1964 San Juan vintage jersey represents his deep roots on the island. Clemente wore #21 throughout his career — a number now retired across all of MLB on the anniversary of his passing. By 1964 he was an established Pittsburgh Pirates star: a two-time Gold Glove winner with a .312 career batting average, universally regarded as the finest right fielder of his era.

Clemente died on December 31, 1972, in a plane crash while delivering earthquake relief supplies to Nicaragua — he was 38 years old with 3,000 career hits. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame immediately, the five-year waiting period waived in his honour. The Roberto Clemente Award is now given annually to the MLB player who best represents the sport through community service.
