Kobe Bryant played in the 1996 McDonald's All-American Game wearing #8 — one of the most anticipated high school prospects ever to enter the event. Coming out of Lower Merion High School in Pennsylvania, Kobe was the last great guard to go directly from high school to the NBA before the age restriction ended that pathway. He scored 31 points in the All-American Game, was named co-MVP and already displayed the footwork, pull-up shooting and competitive intensity that would define his career.
The Charlotte Hornets drafted Kobe 13th overall and traded him to the Lakers for Vlade Divac. He won five NBA championships, two Finals MVPs and one regular season MVP across 20 seasons in purple and gold. The 1996 McDonald's jersey with his #8 is a collector's piece from the final high school showcase of one of basketball's greatest careers — the beginning of the Mamba story.
