Josh Gibson is widely regarded as the greatest catcher in baseball history and one of the most powerful hitters the sport has ever produced. Playing for the Homestead Grays in the Negro National League throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Gibson is estimated to have hit nearly 800 home runs across his career — including a reported 84 in a single season in 1936. He was called the Black Babe Ruth, though many who saw both play insisted Gibson was the superior hitter.

Gibson won nine Negro League batting titles and led the Homestead Grays to nine consecutive Negro National League pennants from 1937 to 1945. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. He never got to play in the MLB due to the colour barrier — his career is one of the most painful what-ifs in American sports history. This Homestead Grays throwback honours a man who was almost certainly the greatest hitter of his era.
