Earl 'The Goat' Manigault is widely regarded as the greatest street basketball player who ever lived — a player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar described as the most talented he had ever seen. Playing on the courts of Harlem in the 1960s, Manigault could reputedly snatch quarters off the top of the backboard and dunk, put the ball back, and dunk again in a single leap. His vertical was legendary. Bill Bradley, playing college ball at Princeton, said Manigault was the best player he had ever faced.
Drug addiction derailed what should have been a professional career — Manigault was never able to sustain the straight path required to reach the NBA despite his extraordinary talent. He later turned his life around and ran youth basketball programmes in Harlem for decades. His story is one of basketball's great tragedies and one of its most important redemption narratives. This #32 throwback honours the Goat — the greatest player most people never heard of.
