Arvydas Sabonis is widely considered the greatest European basketball player of all time. This 1992 Soviet Union jersey is historically unique — by the time of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics the USSR had dissolved, and Sabonis competed for a transitional Unified Team. He had already won the 1988 Olympic gold medal for the USSR, dominating despite a devastating Achilles tendon rupture the year before.
Portland drafted Sabonis 24th overall in 1986 but he didn't reach the NBA until 1995 — at 30 years old, with two torn Achilles tendons behind him. He still averaged 14.5 points and 8.1 rebounds in his rookie season. Had he come to the NBA healthy at 22, most analysts believe he would have been a top-5 all-time player. This Soviet Union jersey is a collector's piece from one of basketball's greatest what-if stories.
