Jim Bouton wore #56 for the New York Yankees in the 1960s — a starting pitcher who won 21 games in 1963 and pitched in two World Series before arm injuries forced him to reinvent himself as a knuckleball pitcher. His career on the mound is only part of his story: in 1970 Bouton published Ball Four, the first honest tell-all diary of a baseball season, which revealed the private lives, drinking habits and clubhouse culture of professional baseball in a way the sport had never seen. The Yankees tried to suppress it. It became a bestseller.
Ball Four is considered one of the most important sports books ever written — not for sports analysis but for its role in humanising athletes and challenging the mythology surrounding professional sports. Bouton was ostracised by much of baseball's establishment for writing it but was eventually welcomed back. He was a Yankees World Series champion in 1962, a writer who changed sports journalism, and one of the game's most fascinating characters. This #56 vintage Yankees jersey honours the pitcher who told the truth.
